At OLR teachers recognise the benefits of teaching both through and about The Arts. Engagement with the Arts develops students' creativity, imagination, aesthetic understanding, empathy, communication and critical thinking skills.
In the Arts, students learn as artists and audience through intellectual, emotional and sensory experiences. They acquire skills specific to the Arts subjects and develop critical understanding that informs decision-making and aesthetic choices.
Students experience the Arts through connections with other learning areas including English. Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and Technologies but also participate in planned learning experiences designed to develop specific knowledge and skills for the Arts through both making and responding to art in different forms.
There are five areas within the Arts curriculum: Dance, Drama, Media, Music and Visual Arts. At Our Lady of the Rosary, specific Music and Dance knowledge and skills are taught by a specialist teacher but students also enjoy opportunities to learn through music and dance in other curriculum areas.
As The Arts curriculum is generally organised into two year bands, (P-2, 3-4, 5-6), one area of the Arts is a particular focus each semester over a two year period. This will facilitate more effective professional development opportunities for teachers as this new curriculum is implemented and also allows for whole school celebrations of learning with a focus on particular components of The Arts curriculum.
