Geography
In Years 3 & 4 approximately 20 hours of teaching time is allocated to Geography per semester. This semester allocation may be spread across one or two terms at the discretion of the teaching team.

Year 3
Are we there yet?
Students use the picture book by the same name to learn the names of Australia’s States and territories, capital cities and special landmarks. They compare the representation of Australia as states and territories to other representations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander countries and places. |
Who are our neighbours?
Students view and draw maps that show the location of Australia and its near neighbours using cartographic conventions including legends, titles and north point. Students learn about the different climate types within Australia and the main climate types of the world. |
How are we the same and different?
Students explore the similarities and differences between places including climate, types of settlements and demographic characteristics. . They pose geographical questions to another class in a different place and compare the data to identify similarities and differences. |
How do we feel about places?
Students build an understanding of different perspectives of places and how these places can be respected and cared for. They consider how Australia can be represented in different ways including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Countries and Places. They recall special features of Australia and suggest reasons why they should be protected. |
Year 4
Circle of Life
Students discover major countries in Africa and South America and identify patterns in natural features including vegetation. They investigate the interdependence between animals and vegetation and promote the protection of a unique environment and its animal inhabitants. |
Nim's Island
Students learn about natural vegetation and the importance of environments to animals and people, and different views on how they can be protected as they engage with a story about young girl who lives on an isolated island. |
What a lot of rubbish!
Students collect data about litter in the school and create maps, tables and graphs to display their data. They view maps of our catchment and track the journey of plastic from drains to the ocean, and raise awareness about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. |
