Forms and Purposes of Assessment
At Our Lady of the Rosary School assessment is valued as an essential part of the learning process. Ongoing assessment provides information to students, teachers and parents about where students are at, and help them to identify where they will go next and how they will get there in their learning journey.

"Assessment for learning is the process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning, where they need to go and how best to get there." (Assessment Reform Group, 2002) |
Assessment has three main purposes:
Assessment for Learning (Diagnostic) - occurs when teachers use inferences about student progress to inform their teaching
Assessment as Learning (Formative) - occurs when students reflect on and monitor their progress to inform their future learning goals
Assessment of Learning (Summative) - occurs when teachers use evidence of student learning to make judgements on student achievement against goals and standards
Teachers are encouraged to reflect on practice to ensure a range and balance of assessment types in all curriculum areas.

"Big Picture" Data
At OLR longitudinal data is gathered to develop an illustration of individual student progress and to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning programs. Much of this data comes from "point-in-time" standardised tests and is useful for tracking general progress and providing further information about individual students so that teachers can ask critical questions about the effectiveness of teaching and learning for individuals and groups. This data can be accessed in different locations.
- The Business Intelligence Tool - The BI Tool is being developed to assist teachers and schools in accessing and interpreting data to improve learning and teaching for individuals and the school. Data is gathered from NAPLAN, SRS and ACER and is available on-line through K-Web.
- Online Assessment and Reporting System - The OARS website from ACER is used for students to undertake online testing in Literacy, Numeracy and General Aptitude. Data from these tests is immediately available to teachers and can be manipulated easily to help to identify patterns and anomalies in the data.
- School Based Data collection - Results from standardised tests that are not yet available through the BI Tool are collated in a spreadsheet and accessible via the school portal.
