Key Messages of the Australian Curriculum - English
Soundwaves - Whole school approach to developing phonemic awarenessThe phonemic approach is recognised as one of the most effective ways to teach and learn spelling and reading skills. The Sound Waves phonemic approach uses a sound-to-letter strategy, which acknowledges that sounds can be represented in more than one way in written form. This approach focuses first on the basic units of sound in our language – phonemes. It then explores the letters that represent these sounds and how they can be put together to form the written words in our language.
Online resources to support the Soundwaves program including video demonstrations and interactive games are available through the Firefly Education website.
HandwritingStudents at OLR develop handwriting skills through direct instruction, demonstration and practice using a variety of resources. Resources to support the teaching of Queensland Beginner Script and Queensland Cursive including downloadable fonts and work pages are available through The Learning Place.
Assessment of ReadingShared beliefs about the assessment of reading and tracking reading progress. Tools used including PM Benchmarking, PAT-R, NAPLAN results etc.
