People in my Community
Through role play, students identify how people produce familiar products and services to meet personal and community needs, e.g. bakers bake bread, farmers grow food, truck drivers deliver goods, doctors keep us healthy. |
What's it made of?
Through a Science inquiry, students explore the characteristics of materials that make them suitable for different purposes. Design Technology Explore the characteristics and properties of materials and components that are used to produce designed solutions (ACTDEK004) |
On the move
In conjunction with a Science investigation into how things move, students explore how technologies use forces to create movement in products. Design Technology Explore how technologies use forces to create movement in products (ACTDEK002) |
Year 1
Farm to Table
Students explore how plants and animals are grown for food, clothing and shelter and how food is prepared for healthy eating. |
Natural and Managed environments
Students ask questions about natural and managed environments and impacts on them when selecting materials, tools and equipment when designing and making products, for example harvesting products from the school garden and using recycled clothing |
Spaghetti Towers
Students explore the characteristics and properties of spaghetti and marshmallows that make them useful for building a tower. (Links to Science) |
Year 2
Design
and Technologies
Following sequenced steps students demonstrate safe use of tools and equipment when producing designed solutions. |
Toys, toys, toys
Students design and build a toy based on home-made toys from the past that meets particular needs and requirements (e.g. safe, sustainable, cost, fun). They explore the "pushes and pulls" that create movement in their product. |
