English
In Prep - Year 2, English comprises approximately 65 hours of dedicated teaching and learning time per term. This equates to more than 20% of the total teaching time. Early literacy development is considered paramount and the general capability of Literacy is developed through all other aspects of the curriculum, in addition to this dedicated teaching time.

Prep
Me and my family
Students identify and recognise letters and sounds. Students explore letter formation. Students understand that language can be used to explore ways of expressing themselves. |
Familiar Stories
Students begin to explore upper and lower case letters, recognizing a sentence. Students attempt to write simple words. Students explore a range of familiar stories, sequencing, retelling, identifying text features (characters, beginning, middle, end etc.) |
Nursery Rhymes
Students develop their conceptual understanding of "text", "sentence", "word", and "letter". They begin to write sentences and read simple texts. Students explore rhyme and rhythm in songs, and poems of different cultures. Students present a nursery rhyme to the class and use descriptive language to describe a hidden object (Mystery Bag) |
I can write
Students begin to explore vowels and some diagraphs. Students write full sentences independently using punctuations and capital/ lower case letters. Students share experiences with the class about the "Visiting Bear". |
Year 1
What a Wonderful World
Students reflect on experiences in Science through oral explanations. They learn to use physical gestures to support oral texts. Students produce simple short recounts supporting their understanding of its structure. After engaging in texts, videos and an incursion on Life in the Olden Days children then use ICT to recreate pictures they liked and use phonic skills to label pictures. |
Stories from Around the World
Children create imaginative texts with a focus on language to describe and explain events, settings and characters based on real experiences and stories from the past Children explore picture books, stories and films from Asian peoples, Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples and traditional tales from other cultures. Have a multicultural rotation day to celebrate the Unity in Diversity. |
Up, Down and all Around
Children listen to, read and view poetry, rhyming verse and engage with structure and language to perform to an audience. Children explore and experiment with the language in rhyming verse and poetry. |
The Best Pet
Create texts and follow generic structure to persuade a familiar audience about an opinion. Children listen to, read, view and interpret spoken, written and multimodal texts designed to persuade. Children look at the way multimodal information texts use language and visual images to persuade an audience about which pet is the best pet in the world. |
Year 2
Author study - Eric Carle
Students listen to and read picture books by Eric Carle and compare opinions about different texts. Students explore diagrams and write simple explanations and present a brief oral report about life stages of animals and plants. |
Giggle Poetry
Students Identify, reproduce and experiment with rhythmic, sound and word patterns in poems, chants, rhymes and songs. Students will produce simple poetry using AB patterns. In Literature students read a variety of texts about Friendship and explore the common themes. Charlotte’s Web links the themes of friendship and the local area show. Through the picture book Show Day, students use concept maps to group ideas and apply this in other areas such as history and science. |
Mrs Muddle-Up
Using the Muddles storythread as a springboard, students write letters, descriptions (character and place), procedures (recipe). Students learn to use adjectives to extend noun groups. They write a list of wishes for possums and write a description about a perfect possum place. Through the role-on-the-wall technique, students engage with the characters of the storythread exploring their motivations and conflict resolution. |
A Letter from Grandpa
Students write a letter to their grandparents and share the replies with the class. They identify common and proper nouns in the letters. They write an information report to tell about what they have learnt about the ways that toys have changed from the past. The song ‘The Marvellous Toy’ is used as a listening focus. Students present a short, rehearsed talk on their favourite toy. |
