Prep
BRM Family
Students explore beat, rhythm and simple melody through imitation using voice, body percussion and movement. They copy and invent rhythmic patterns. Students understand turn-taking in group music making. |
Sound Patterns
Students reproduce pitch & rhythm patterns when they sing and play. They sequence patterns of sound & movement. They discriminate between sound and silence, and high and low. |
Symbols
Students use learned pitch & rhythm patterns to improvise, create and perform. They use picture symbols to read patterns. Students discriminate between soft and loud, and ascending and descending sounds. |
Performance
Students work with others to sing and play, echo and ‘question and answer’ patterns. They learn to move or play in a circle both clockwise and anticlockwise. |
Year 1
Note Families
Students develop listening skills through identification of musical elements, e.g., soft/loud, high/low; echoing pitch/rhythm. They use symbols and words to describe musical elements found in songs, chants and rhymes. |
Compose
Students use learned music notation symbols ( ♩, ♫ and z) and invented symbols to read/play rhythmic patterns. They work with others to improvise and compose. |
Invent
Students sing, play and move to learned songs. They improvise, create and perform their own rhymes, rhythms and melodies. Students use ♩, ♫ and z music notation to read and play. |
Perform
Using solfa pitch ladders (soh,mi, lah,)and ♩, ♪,♫ and z, students sing, play, read, write, create and perform. They move and perform with an understanding of beat and tempo. |
Year 2
Growing & Changing
Students consolidate knowledge of beat, rhythm and pitch pattern ‘family’ groups through singing, playing and writing. They invent new pattern groups and sing/play these and learned songs. They demonstrate an understanding of beat and tempo through movement. |
Pentatonic Ladder
Students write notes of pentatonic scale on ladder. They use these notes to sing, play and invent their own patterns. Students learn to aurally and visually recognize note patterns in learned songs. They move to a beat and differentiate rhythm by clapping. |
Home Note – Doh
Students recognize doh as the ‘home’ note of each piece through singing, playing, creating and moving. They respond to dynamics, beat, rhythm, melody and timbre through singing, playing, moving, listening and creating. |
Performance
Students learn the elements of performance and demonstrate these through singing, playing, moving, listening and creating. They discriminate between speech/song, sound/silence, beat/rhythm, loud/soft, high/low, long/short, some instrument timbres. |
